29 Nov 08 Google Chrome deemed fastest browser

Google’s Chrome browser has been found to be the fastest on the market following testing by technology website ExtremeTech.

The site pitted Chrome, Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), Safari, Firefox and Opera against each other to find out which browser was capable of loading web pages the fastest.

As well as using speed test sites, ExtremeTech looked at how quickly each browser loaded pages from ten content-rich websites.

It also tested each browser on how it dealt with Adobe Flash rich media content, JavaScript and other web technologies.

Chrome was deemed the winner, followed by Firefox and Opera. IE7 and Safari failed to place in the overall ranking.

“Google uses its own knowledge of search and browsing habits to optimise Chrome, but Chrome is still in early development,” John Brandon of ExtremeTech said.

“Microsoft really needs to get IE8 out the door - IE7 not only has compatibility issues, but is substantially slower in many ways,” he added.

According to Net Applications, IE accounts for 71.27 per cent of the browser market, followed by Firefox with almost 20 per cent and Safari with 6.57 per cent.
